Lectio Divina, Latin for “divine reading,” is an ancient Christian practice of praying with Scripture by slowly reading, meditating, and conversing with God about a passage. It moves beyond studying the text, focusing instead on letting a word or phrase personally speak to you. It is often summarized by four steps: Read, Reflect, Respond, and Rest.
The Four Simple Steps (The 4 R’s):
1. Read (Lectio):Â Read a short scripture passage slowly and repeatedly, allowing a word or phrase to stand out.
2. Reflect (Meditatio):Â Think about this word or phrase. Consider what it means for your life and what God is saying to you through it.
3. Respond (Oratio): Turn your reflections into a personal conversation with God—thanksgiving, asking for help, or praise.
4. Rest (Contemplatio):Â Sit quietly in God’s presence, letting the message sink into your heart without needing words.
This practice encourages a deeper, relational connection with God, treating the Bible as a living conversation rather than just a text.
